Bu yöntem günümüzde dünyanın en popüler ikinci estetik ameliyat tipi; 2010 yılında dünyada 1,5 milyon kadın silikon taktırmak için ameliyat masasına yatmıştır.
6 çocuk annesi olan Timmie Jean Lindsey, Teksas eyaletindeki Houston’da bir bıçak altına yattığında, 1962 senesi ilkbahardı.
Sütyen ölçüsü iki saatte B’den C’ye çıkan Lindsey, böylelikle tarihe geçmiş oldu.
Günümüzde 80 yaşlarında olan Lindsey, “Harika olmuşlardı. Yumuşaktılar ve aynı gerçek meme gibiydiler” diye konuşmuştur.
“Ama asıl farkı sokağa çıkıp da erkekler arkamdan ıslık çalmaya başladığında gördüm.”
Sonuçları hoşuna gitse de, Lindsey aslında bu tür bir ameliyat olmayı planlamamış.
Göğsünde ki dövmeyi sildirmeye gittiği hastanede, doktorlar ona dünyada ilk kez yapılacak böyle bir operasyona gönüllü olup olmayacağını sormuş.
“Ben aslında kulaklarımı arkaya yatırtmak istiyordum. Fil kulağı gibiydiler. Doktorlar ‘E tamam onu da yaparız’ dediler.” Ve böylelikle el sıkışmışlar.
Alanlarında öncü olmak isteyen cerrahlarının ismi Frank Gerow ve Thomas Cronin imiş.
Yeni bir meme implantı fikri Gerow’dan çıkmış.
Bu konuda bir kitap yazan Teresa Riordan, “Frank Gerow kanla dolu bir plastik torbayı sıkmış ve memeye ne kadar benzediğini fark etmiş.” diye anlatıyor durumu.
“Ve bir çeşit ‘Evreka!’ anı yaşayarak silikon meme implantını ilk kez o zaman düşünmüş.” . İlk denemeler Esmeralda isimli bir köpek üzerinde yapılmış.
Lakin köpek iki hafta sonra dikiş yerlerini dişlemeye başlayınca silikonu çıkartmak zorunda kalmışlar fakat yine de ameliyatın başarılı geçtiği ve silikonun “su kadar zararsız” olduğu belirtilmiş.
Ardından silikonu deneyecek kadın gönüllü arayışı başlamış.

O dönemde Gerow ve Cronin’in yanında çalışan genç bir cerrah olan Thomas Biggs, Lindsey’in ameliyatından da memnun çıktıklarını anlatıyor.
Ama bunun ne kadar önemli bir an olduğunu kesinlikle kavrayamadığını da ifade ediyor.
“Tabii heyecan vericiydi, ama geleceği gören bir aynam olsaydı, herhalde küçük dilimi yutardım.”

Playboy ve Barbie
Zamanlaması da denk geldi. 1950’lerin Amerikası’nda daha büyük meme idealini destekleyen bir dizi kültürel unsur vardı.
Playboy dergisi ve Barbie bebeklerin ortaya çıkışı bu döneme denk geliyor. Bir de film yıldızları vardı.
Yazar Teresa Riordan “Marilyn Monroe ile Jane Russell’ın dolgun göğüsleri ve Dior’un 1957 koleksiyonunda ön plana çıkardığı bol kavisli vücut hatları, kadınlara memelerini büyütmeyi düşündürmeye başlamıştı.” diye anlatıyor.

The first breast augmentation surgery with silicone implants was performed 50 years ago.
This method is the second most popular type of plastic surgery in the world today; In 2010, 1.5 million women in the world went to the operating table to have silicone implants.
It was spring of 1962 when Timmie Jean Lindsey, a mother of six, went under the knife in Houston, Texas.
Lindsey, whose bra size went from B to C in two hours, thus went down in history.
“They were great. They were soft and just like real breasts,” said Lindsey, now in her 80s.
“But I saw the difference when I went out into the street and the men started whistling behind me.”
While she liked the results, Lindsey didn’t actually plan to have this type of surgery.
At the hospital where she went to have the tattoo removed on her chest, the doctors asked her if she would volunteer for such an operation, which would be the first in the world.
“I actually wanted to have my ears tilted back. They were like elephant ears. The doctors said, ‘Well, we can do that too.'” And so they shook hands.
The names of the surgeons who wanted to be pioneers in their fields were Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin.
The idea for a new breast implant came from Gerow.
Teresa Riordan, who wrote a book on the subject, said, “Frank Gerow squeezed a plastic bag filled with blood and realized how much it looked like a breast.” he explains the situation.
“And a kind of ‘Eureka!’ That’s when he first thought of a silicone breast implant by living the moment.” . The first trials were done on a dog named Esmeralda.
However, when the dog started biting the seams two weeks later, they had to remove the silicone, but it was stated that the surgery was still successful and the silicone was “as harmless as water”.
Then the search for female volunteers to try the silicone started.
History of Breast Silicones
Thomas Biggs, a young surgeon who worked with Gerow and Cronin at the time, explains that they were also satisfied with Lindsey’s surgery.
But he also states that he absolutely cannot grasp how important this moment is.
“Sure, it was exciting, but if I had a mirror that saw the future, I’d probably swallow my little tongue.”
It was at the International Society of Aesthetic Surgeons meeting held in Washington in 1963 that they began to grasp the significance of the event.
Cronin made a presentation and, as Biggs put it, “The world of plastic surgery has been taken by storm.”
Playboy and Barbie
The timing also matched. In 1950s America, there were a number of cultural elements that supported the ideal of larger breasts.
Playboy magazine and the emergence of Barbie dolls coincide with this period. There were also movie stars.
Author Teresa Riordan says, “The full breasts of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, and the loosely curved body lines featured in Dior’s 1957 collection, began to make women think of enlarging their breasts.” he tells.
